China released the results of the seventh national census on 11th May 2021. The census showed that 845,697 foreigners are living in China. According to the results, released as follows are the major data about residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners living in Mainland of China.
The State Council Information Office holds a press conference on the data of the seventh national population census, which is the largest of its kind across the world. It helps China figure out its population size, structure and distribution as well as the latest demographic changes and trends, according to the China National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
I. Population
China’s population on the mainland reached 1.41178 billion, the figure does not include Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan residents and foreigners who live in the Mainland China.
The census showed that 845,697 foreigners are living in 31 provinces, a notable rise compared with 593,832 a decade ago.
There are 371,380 residents from Hong Kong, 55,732 residents from Macao, 157886 residents from Taiwan. So the total number of people is 1,430,695.
II. Gender Composition
Of the above population, 736,286 people were males, and 694,409 people were females. Among them, there were 202,296 males and 169,084 females from Hong Kong, there were 29,067 males and 26,665 females from Macao, and 102,897 males and 54,989 females from Taiwan. For the foreigners, there were 402,026 males and 44,3671 females.
III. Duration of Residence
From the above data, 40,659 people stayed for less than 3 months, 56,342 people stayed for 3 to 6 months, 166,884 people stayed for 6 to 12 months, 248,174 people stayed for 1 to 2 years, and 314,954 people stayed for 2 to 5 years, and 603,682 people stayed for more than 5 years.
IV. Purposes of Staying in Mainland China
Among them, 77,008 people came to China for business, 444,336 people came for employment/work, 219,761 people came for study, 419,517 people came for the purpose of settlement, 74,735 persons came to visit relatives, and 195,338 people came for other purposes.
V. Geographic Distribution of the Foreigners
By residence of the above people, the top ten provinces in terms of population size were as follows: Guangdong had 418,509 people, Yunnan had 379,281 people, Shanghai had 163,954 people, Fujian had 106,248 people, Beijing had 62,812 persons, Jiangsu had 58,201 persons, Zhejiang had 46,189 people, Guangxi had 26,043 people, Shandong had 21,829 people, and Liaoning had 20,562 persons. The remaining 127,067 people resided in other provinces.

- All figures in this Communiqué are preliminary results.
- The above population refers to residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners living in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of the Chinese mainland at the reference time of the census and registered for the census, while those shortly staying for business, travel and other purposes were not included.
